3 May 2004 Events in Iraq.

15.39 Baghdad. US SOLDIER KILLED BY SNIPER FIRE. One US soldier was killed and two wounded while guarding a weapons cache south of Baghdad.

15.25 Najaf. TWO DEAD IN NAJAF. Shi'ite guerrillas launch mortar attack on US base and exchange light artillery fire. Two Iraqis dead and 15 wounded.

13.30 Najaf. ITALIAN TV CREW KIDNAPPED but released shortly thereafer in Najaf.

13:00 Rome. BERLUSCONI: "WE MUST STAY UNTIL THE END". Italy must save Iraq from civil war. [Actually, Silvio, you don't]

12:15 Mosul. US TROOPS KILL 2 IRAQIS. US troops open fire on a pair of Iraqis planting a roadside bomb.

12:15 Sofia. BULGARIA REPATRIATES OBJECTORS. 20 Bulgarian troops sent home. They opposed their continuing presence in Karbala.

12:12 Kirkuk. SHI'A LEADER OF KIRKUK ARRESTED for suspected sabotage of oil pipeline.

12:08 Najaf. 10 MORTAR ROUNDS DIRECTED AGAINST US POSITION IN NAJAF.

11:50 Nassiriya. ITALIAN CONVOY ATTACKED. Convoy comes under fire in Suk Al-Shiyookh, 20 km south of Nassiriya.

11:20 Baghdad. IRAQI HUMAN RIGHTS MINISTER QUITS. Abdel Bassat Turki presented his resignation in protest on 8 April but officially confirms departure this morning.

10:40 Washington. WRITTEN REPRIMAND SENT TO PRISONER ABUSERS. The 6 military officers under investigation for prisoner abuse receive a letter of reprimand.

10:24 Karbala. 72-hour truce called by Sadr militia

09:50 Mossul. NEW DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST FLAG. Continuing protests against new flag by Shi'a and Sunnis.

09:30 Fallujah. FALLUJAH BRIGADE to be commanded by Mohammed Latif, substituting Jassim Mohammed Saleh.

08:15 London. BRITISH SOLDIERS CONFIRM VERACITY OF TORTURE PICTURES

06.10 Baghdad. THE BLOODY MONTH OF MAY. 14 US soldiers killed in 24 hours.
