A Sea Change

This blog generally deals with Iraq. But Condi Rice has just made the most remarkable statement--I am floored:

Miss Rice said a Palestinian state - recognised by Israel - was "within our grasp", but it must be viable and contiguous with enough land to function properly. [BBC]

Contiguous? Did she say, contiguous? You mean, not a wormy patch of land with tunnels and overpasses, criss-crossed by barriers and checkpoints? You mean, Sharon on a short leash? You mean, no IDF target practice in playgrounds? No bank robberies by IDF? No burning of records and property deeds? No targeted assassinations, too? No Iron Fist operations in Gaza?

What accounts for the flip-flop? Any thoughts?

What accounts for the flip-flop? Any thoughts?maybe it's not a flip flop. maybe condi isn't aware that the west bank and gaza are not connected to each other. after all, she is the one who supposedly taught georgie about international politics.

such is the risk with putting an academic whose expertise is soviet politics in charge of a post-cold war world.

Maybe it will consist of only Gaza, and be contiguous with Egypt.

Great comments! Thank you. But I am beginning to believe that the President's numbers are down so he's trying out the Palestine option. Merely trying, mind you.
