Somalia

Not embarrassed to say I told you so about the war that Uncle Sam made on Somalia:

"United Nations officials now concede that the country was in better shape during the brief reign of Somalia’s Islamist movement last year. “It was more peaceful, and much easier for us to work,” Mr. Laroche said. “The Islamists didn’t cause us any problems.”
...
“This [transitional] government doesn’t control one inch of territory from the Kenyan border up to Mogadishu,” said a Western diplomat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing diplomatic protocol."

I called this one, too. I guess a lot of people did. Only trouble I found was that people seem to have a huge problem with the idea of Islamic governments actually working. What was your own experience? Did you have any trouble relaying to people that Sharia in Somalia might not be such a bad idea?

Under the Islamic Courts, the militias were disarmed, the port was open, the schools and hospitals functioning and the market places were not being bombed. Saudi has a Sharia government and gets the cachet of Washington. In other words: poor man's Sharia bad, rich monarch's Sharia good.

Interesting. I think you're right that wealth is a huge factor. I've got a slightly different take here:
