January 15 Events in Iraq

23:55 Erbil. Seven dead in attack. CNN-Turkey reports a carbomb in Erbil targeting a building where Jalal Talabani and Masoud Barzani were meeting. Seven are known dead.

23:52 Kirkuk. One policeman dies. An Iraqi policeman was killed and four wounded in an attack by armed men on a checkpoint adjacent to a large US military installation.

23:49 Ft. Hood. Graner gets ten years. Spc Charles Graner received a dishonorable discharge and a sentence of ten years in prison after being found guilty of prisoner abuse and torture by a military tribunal.

23:01 Baghdad. Ansar al Sunna claims credit in kidnapping of Iraqi soldiers. Ansar al Sunna says it kidnapped 15 Iraqi troops yesterday in Baghdad. The soldiers were travelling aboard a bus to the al Assad US military base in al Anbar province when they were attacked and kidnapped by rebel commandos.

20:08 Samarra. Five Iraqi soldiers killed. Guerrillas attacked a checkpoint near Samarra killing four Iraqi soldiers. A fifth soldier was killed by mortar fire inside the city.

19:19 Baghdad. US soldier and Red Cross worker killed. In Geneva, the ICRC announced the death of an Iraqi employee, kidnapped on 13 January. The man, a father of four, worked as a driver for the Red Cross since July. His body was found abandoned west of Baghdad. Meanwhile a US soldier was killed in Babil Province

16:29 Kuwait. Security forces kill Saudi radical Islamist. A presumed radical Islamist was slain in a gunbattle south of Kuwait City. Two policemen were wounded.

15:32 Baghdad. Thirteen corpses recovered south of the capital. The bodies of twelve men and a young woman were found near Latifiya. All had been slain by gunshot. Meanwhile, this morning the bodies of a contractor and three employees who worked for a foreign company were found along a highway outside Kut, 60 km south of Baghdad. Police said that prior to the incident, they had received a death threat demanding that they cease working with foreigners.

14:19 Baghdad. Police station hit by mortar fire. Two persons were wounded when mortar rounds struck a police station near the Green Zone.

14:09 Lisbon. Portuguese government to withdraw troops on 12 February. Lisbon to withdraw 120 members of the Portuguese National Republican Guard stationed in Nassiriya.

11:44 Mosul. One US soldier killed and three wounded. Guerrillas attacked a US military convoy in Mosul, killing one US soldier and wounding three.
